PTE Tips from Legacy Experts
Read Aloud — Fluency Is King
The AI scores your oral fluency and pronunciation. Speak at a natural, steady pace — don’t rush. Pausing at commas and full stops signals fluency.
Repeat Sentence — Echo Every Word
Try to recall as many words as possible in the exact order. Even partial matches give partial credit. Don’t go silent after missing a word.
Describe Image — Use a Template
Have a fixed structure: “This image shows… The key trend is… Overall…” Templates prevent blank moments and boost fluency scores.
Don’t Restart — Hesitations Cost Points
Once you start, keep going. Restarting triggers fluency penalties. A smooth wrong answer often scores better than a halting correct one.
Summarise Written Text — One Sentence Only
Your entire response must be a single complex sentence (5–75 words). Use relative clauses and connectors like “which”, “while”, and “although”.
Essay — Commit to One Side
PTE essays are AI-scored for task completion. A clear, consistent argument scores higher than a vague “both sides” approach.
Word Count Matters
Essay: aim for 200–300 words. Under 200 gets penalised for length. Over 350 risks padding penalties. Stay in the sweet spot.
Avoid Spelling Errors — AI Is Strict
Unlike human examiners, the PTE AI has zero tolerance for spelling. Review before time ends — one wrong spelling can lower your Writing score.
Re-order Paragraphs — Find the Topic Sentence
The opening sentence has no pronoun referring backwards and introduces the main idea. Identify it first, then build the sequence logically.
Fill in the Blanks — Eliminate First
Cross off options that don’t fit grammatically or contextually. Each blank has only one correct answer — elimination speeds up decisions.
MCQ Multiple Answers — Beware Negatives
Wrong selections deduct points. If you’re unsure, leave it blank rather than guessing. This is the one question type where caution beats courage.
Manage Time Ruthlessly
Reading tasks range from 32–41 minutes total. Skipping one hard question and returning later saves 3–5 minutes for other tasks.
Summarise Spoken Text — Note Keywords
Jot down 5–8 keywords while listening. Your 50–70 word summary must capture the main points — not every detail. Quality over quantity.
Write from Dictation — Spelling Is Everything
This task carries the highest weight in Listening. Write every word you hear — spelling errors deduct marks. Guess rather than leave blank.
Highlight Correct Summary — Listen for Main Idea
Ignore answer options until the audio ends. Distractors include details that are mentioned but not the main focus. Pick the option that covers the gist.
Select Missing Word — Predict Before It Ends
The audio cuts off before the final word. Use context from the whole sentence to predict before options appear — your instinct here is usually right.
