Expert Advice

IELTS Tips from Legacy Experts

1

Read Questions Before Audio Plays

Use the 30-second preview time to scan questions and underline keywords. This helps you anticipate answers.

2

Focus on Synonyms & Paraphrases

The audio rarely uses the exact words in the question. Train your ear to recognise paraphrased ideas.

3

Don’t Dwell on Missed Answers

If you miss an answer, move on immediately. Losing focus on one question costs you the next two.

4

Check Spelling During Transfer Time

You get 10 minutes to transfer answers. Use it carefully — incorrect spelling marks the answer wrong.

1

Skim First, Read in Detail Later

Don’t read every word initially. Skim headings, first lines of paragraphs, and visuals to grasp structure.

2

Use Paragraph Headings as a Map

Matching headings task? Identify the main idea of each paragraph — not supporting details — to find the match.

3

True/False/Not Given — Be Precise

“Not Given” means the passage neither confirms nor denies the statement. Don’t use outside knowledge.

4

Time Management Is Everything

Spend roughly 20 minutes per passage. If a question takes too long, skip and return — don’t sacrifice the rest.

1

Task 2 Carries More Weight

Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1. Spend 40 minutes on it and 20 minutes on Task 1.

2

Address All Parts of the Prompt

Read the question carefully. Missing any part of the task — even partially — will significantly lower your band.

3

Use a Variety of Sentence Structures

Mix simple, compound, and complex sentences. Grammatical range is a key scoring criterion.

4

Leave 5 Minutes for Proofreading

Review for subject-verb agreement, article errors, and punctuation. Minor errors add up and reduce your score.

1

Fluency Over Accuracy

Don’t stop to correct every mistake. Natural flow and confident delivery score higher than stilted perfection.

2

Expand Your Answers in Part 1

Never give one-word answers. Add a reason or example — “Yes, I enjoy cooking because it relaxes me after work.”

3

Use the 1-Minute Prep Wisely in Part 2

Jot down 3–4 bullet points covering what, when, where, and why. This is your cue card — use it.

4

Show Range of Vocabulary

Use topic-specific vocabulary naturally. Avoid repeating the same words — paraphrase using synonyms you’re confident in.
